He is the author of Now I Know Who My Friends Are: Voices from the Underground of the Internet (Farrar, Strauss and Giroux). The book tells the story of Internet workers in China, Cuba and Russia. Literature Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa called the story "a carefully researched and researched story that reads like a thriller." He was chief strategy officer at Parlio, a Silicon Valley social media startup acquired by Quora. He has performed publicly around the world and is currently represented by Le Bureau. He has been interviewed on CNN, MSNBC, NPR, BBC and many other TV and radio programs. His books have received awards from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Tufts, UC San Francisco, and other schools. Emily speaks Chinese, Japanese, French and Spanish. He graduated summa cum laude from Brown University and received a master's degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard.
