Advertisers for this year's Super Bowl are riding a wave of nostalgia, judging by the ads and teasers released ahead of Sunday's big game. And they use a lot of big names too.
After advertising, various companies and brands have featured famous artists and athletes or four of our favorite movies and television shows over the past few decades. Remember "Kaddish"?
But what about the crypto companies that dominated ad production last year? It is mostly a distant memory.
Instead, we now get Anheuser-Busch InBev ads for Michelob Ultra on "Caddyshack." Yes, the 1980 golf-themed movie starring Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Rodney Daggerfield is in commercials featuring tennis star Serena Williams and former quarterback Tony Romo.
But the blast from the past theme doesn't end there. E-commerce company Rakuten Group Inc. The Super Bowl trailer takes us back to the 1995 movie Clueless. Alicia Silverstone, who starred in the film, also stars in the commercials.
Breaking Bad returns with main characters Walter White, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman. But instead of making meth, they make snacks in PepsiCo popcorn commercials.
We can revive the glory of Grease with John Travolta. T-Mobile USA Inc. The show does this by performing a new version of "Summer Nights" with Jack Braff and Donald Faison.
In other cases, the theme of nostalgia is more related to the artist. For example, in Singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan first came to prominence in the 1990s when she appeared in an ad for Bush Beer, endorsing the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Another decades-old artist, Ozzy Osbourne, has also starred in commercials for software company Workday Inc.
Then there are rock icons Dave Grohl, of Foo Fighters and Nirvana fame. There is room for Diageo's Crown Royal whisky.
Ben Stiller brings back his Zoolander character in the Pepsi Zero Sugar commercial.
Sports betting app DraftKings Inc. Kevin Hart stars as famous athletes including David Ortiz, Julius Erving, Lisa Leslie and Tony Hawk.
Speaking of retired athletes, NFL great Peyton Manning has a thing for bush beans.
Of course, not all Super Bowl commercials will be nostalgic. For example, Sam Adams, a Boston beer company. His "Your Boston Cousin" campaign continues, even as it points to a world where fans of the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees come together.
A Unilever Hellman's Mayonnaise ad featuring TV and movie stars Jon Hamm and Brie Larson promotes a very different ham and cheese sandwich. Oh, and Pete Davidson somehow ended up in the village.
